Overview
Most SMB leads aren't ready to buy on first contact — they need education, trust, and the right timing. A HubSpot nurture sequence automates the process of warming up leads with valuable content until they're ready for a sales conversation. This guide covers building the full sequence: enrollment triggers, email timing, lead scoring, and the hand-off to your sales team.
Before you start
- HubSpot Marketing Hub Starter or above
- 6 pieces of value-add content ready
- Defined ICP (ideal customer profile)
Step-by-step guide (5 steps)
Define your enrollment trigger
In HubSpot, go to Automation > Workflows. Create a new Contact-based workflow. Set your trigger: form submission, list membership, or lifecycle stage change (e.g., 'Lead' status).
Build the 6-email sequence
Add 6 emails spaced over 21 days: Day 0 (welcome + your best resource), Day 3 (common problem + how you solve it), Day 7 (case study), Day 10 (FAQ), Day 14 (social proof), Day 21 (offer).
Set lead scoring triggers
Configure HubSpot's lead scoring: +10 for email opens, +20 for link clicks, +30 for pricing page visit. When score hits 50, trigger a sales task assignment.
Negative scoring matters too: -5 for email unsubscribe, -10 for going 14 days without opening.
Add the sales handoff action
At the end of the sequence, add an action: 'Create task' assigned to a sales rep with contact details and their engagement history. Optionally send a Slack notification.
Set up goal tracking
Define the workflow goal: 'Contact books a meeting' or 'Deal created.' HubSpot will auto-unenroll contacts who convert, preventing them from getting nurture emails after buying.
What you'll get

Not setting a goal (contacts get ALL emails even after buying)
Forgetting to suppress existing customers from entering the workflow
Too many emails too fast (no more than 2/week)
