What is a brittle automation?
A brittle automation works only while every field name, template, and login stays exactly the same. A small change upstream breaks it quietly or loudly. Maintenance is the work of noticing and fixing that. Every live workflow needs a person who owns it.
Also called: natural language automation
In plain English
The form renamed 'phone' to 'mobile' and the text went out with a blank. That workflow was brittle. You cannot prevent every change. You can notice fast, keep the path short, and avoid depending on a column you do not control. Brittle means it works until the email subject changes. You will know because it fails silently or files the wrong thing. Prefer a field the other app guarantees, like an id, over a phrase you hope the customer will type. When you must match words, keep a person on the unsure pile. Rebuild the path when the form changes. Do not keep patching a sentence match you no longer understand.
How an owner would use it
For each live automation, write who fixes it and what 'broken' looks like. After a vendor changes a form, run one test. Prefer ids over column positions. Retire workflows you cannot explain.
Common mistakes
Building a clever path nobody else understands means it dies when that person is on a roof. Ignoring failure emails trains you to miss the blank texts. Do not add another AI step to a workflow that is already breaking. Fix the map. Natural language builders that 'just rewrite the automation' can make a brittle path you can no longer see.
A worked example
A garage door company
The lead form changed, the text went blank
This is an illustration, not a customer result. A website form update renamed the phone field. The Zap still ran and sent 'we will call you at .' The office manager, who owns that Zap, sees the failure the same day, remaps the field, and sends the two missed leads by hand.

Questions owners ask
What is a brittle automation?
It is a workflow that breaks when a label, template, or login changes, often without a person noticing immediately.
How do I make automations less brittle?
Keep them short, map fields on purpose, name an owner, and test after the other app changes. Read the failure list.
What is natural language automation?
It is building or editing a workflow by describing it in a sentence. It can be a faster start. You still need to see the steps and own them when a field changes.
