What is chain of thought?
Chain of thought means you ask the model to work through the steps before the final answer. You are requesting the scratch work, not a longer brochure.
Also called: chain-of-thought prompting
In plain English
For a messy estimate note, 'list the panels mentioned, then the parts you are unsure about, then a two-line reply' beats 'write a professional email.' The steps are for you to check. The customer should see the reply, not the model's private ramble, unless you want them to. Asking the model to show its steps can help you spot a bad leap. It can also produce a confident story for a wrong answer. Use the steps as a review aid on hard quotes. Do not paste a customer's private note into a prompt just to watch the reasoning. And do not ship the reasoning to the customer. They asked for the answer. If the steps cite a fee you did not type, throw the steps out with the fee. Reasoning is not a source.
How an owner would use it
Use it when a job has a trap, such as mixing up two vehicles or skipping a question. Read the steps. If a step invented a fact, stop. Do not paste the scratch work into the customer message by habit.
Common mistakes
Asking for chain of thought on a simple reminder makes a long, odd message. It also spends more of the context window. It is not the same as a reasoning model, which may think in a hidden way the product controls. It is not prompt chaining, which is several separate prompts. Do not treat the scratch work as an audit log. It is still a draft, and it can still be wrong.
A worked example
An auto body shop
Steps on the desk, two lines to the customer
This is an illustration, not a customer result. The estimator asks the model to list which photos show the bumper, which damage is not in the photos, and only then draft a scheduling text. The text that goes out is the scheduling text. The step list stays in the shop thread.

Questions owners ask
What is chain of thought prompting?
It is an instruction to show the steps before the final wording, so a person can see how the draft got there.
How should an owner use chain of thought?
Ask for steps on messy jobs, check them, and send only the customer-facing lines. Skip it when the message is a template you already trust.
Will chain of thought stop hallucinations?
No. The steps can be fluent and still false. It helps you notice a bad step. It does not supply a missing fact.
