Running the work

What is a sandbox?

A sandbox is a safe place to run a workflow where the effects are fake or limited to test records. Test mode is the same idea inside a product. It is not production, which is the live system guests and customers are on.

Also called: test mode

In plain English

You want to see the draft and the path without a real text leaving. A sandbox, a test inbox, or a duplicate board does that. If your tool has no sandbox, your sandbox is a test customer you created and a rule that only that record may be messaged. A sandbox is a fake shop. Use it. Put fake customers in it, with fake cards if the tool has a test mode. Run the scary action there: the refund, the mass email, the delete. If you only have production, create one record named TEST and aim the workflow at that record until you trust it. Never point a test at the real list because you were in a hurry. Wipe the test data on a schedule. A sandbox full of last year's fake customers becomes a place you are afraid to click.

How an owner would use it

Run every new automation on test data first. Include a nasty case, not only the perfect one. Move to live only after a duplicate event and a missing field both behave.

Common mistakes

A sandbox that still holds a live API key to the real SMS provider is not a sandbox. Test mode that 'usually' suppresses sends will eventually send. Do not test with a real guest who did not agree to be the guinea pig. Do not skip the sandbox because the demo already looked fine.

A worked example

A bed and breakfast

The test guest gets the text, the real ones do not

This is an illustration, not a customer result. The owner builds the arrival note against a fake reservation named Test Guest. The workflow is filtered to that name. They trigger it twice. One note arrives. Then they remove the filter and watch the first real booking themselves.

Questions owners ask

What is a sandbox?

A sandbox is a test environment or a tightly limited test record where a workflow can run without touching real customers.

How do I sandbox an automation that sends texts?

Point it at a test contact you control, or use the vendor's test mode if their docs say sends are suppressed. Confirm with your own phone before you remove the limit.

What is production?

Production is the live system. Sandbox results do not count there. A workflow is in production when a real customer's event can trigger a real message or a real charge.
