What is an AI agent?
An AI agent is software that can take a goal, pick the next step, use tools you allow, and keep going until it finishes or it needs you. A chatbot answers. An agent is allowed to do something.
Also called: autonomous agent
In plain English
You tell it the outcome, not every click. 'Watch the inbox and draft a reply when someone asks for a quote' is an agent job. 'Write me a quote email' is a prompt. The agent still needs a fence: which inbox, which tools, and which sends need a yes from you.
How an owner would use it
Pick one boring loop you already do every day. Give the agent the SOP, the tool it may touch, and a rule that it drafts until you trust it. Do not start by letting it email customers on its own.
Common mistakes
The usual miss is handing an agent a send button on day one because the demo looked calm. An agent that can email, refund, or book without a stop will do one of those at 9 p.m. when the wording was odd. Do not start with a fully hands-off agent for first contact, prices, or anything you would fire a new hire for getting wrong. A chatbot that only answers hours is a smaller tool, and it is the right one until you have a written path.
A worked example
A plumbing company
After-hours leak notes
This is an illustration, not a customer result. The owner writes a five-line SOP for after-hours leaks. The agent reads the voicemail transcript, drafts a text with the next open slot, and parks the send for the owner until 7 a.m. It does not promise a price.

Questions owners ask
What is an AI agent?
An AI agent is software that works toward a goal, uses tools you allow, and can take more than one step. A chatbot mostly answers the message in front of it.
How do I use an AI agent in a small business?
Start with a job you can check: a draft reply, a reminder, or a checklist. Write the SOP first, connect one tool, and keep a person on anything that quotes money or sends to a customer.
Is an AI agent the same as automation?
No. Automation follows a path you drew. An agent chooses a path inside the rules you set. Many shops need both.
When should an owner not use an AI agent?
Skip the agent when the job is the same steps every time, like a reminder you already approved word for word. That is a plain automation. Also skip it when nobody on the team will read the first week of drafts.
