What is human in the loop?
Human in the loop means a person reviews or approves an AI step before it counts. The agent can prepare the work. A human decides.

It is the opposite of 'set it and forget it.' For a small business, the loop is usually: agent drafts, owner or manager sends. You remove the loop on a step only after that step has been boringly correct. Decide what the person is checking, or they will rubber-stamp. 'Does this match the job notes, and is the price one we already publish?' is a check. 'Looks fine' is a habit. Put the check on fresh wording and on money. Take it off the reminder whose text has not changed in months, or the queue becomes noise and the real mistakes hide in it. Count how often the person changes the draft. If they change it every time, the draft is not ready. If they never change it, they may not be looking.

Keep a person on first contact, on anything with a price, and on anything that goes to the public. Let automation send the reminder you already approved as a template.
Common mistakes
Putting a human on every step, including the reminder template you approved months ago, trains the team to click without reading. Putting a human on nothing trains the model to speak for you. Keep the loop on fresh wording, money, and first contact. Remove it only from a step that has been boringly correct. A checkbox nobody looks at is not a loop.
