What is data sync?
Data sync is a repeating copy of fields from one system to another. It can be one-way or two-way. It is not the same as a source of truth. Sync moves the data. The source of truth says which copy you edit.
In plain English
A new rental in the storage software appears in the spreadsheet the owner actually reads. That is a sync. If someone edits the spreadsheet, a two-way sync might push that edit back, including a typo. One-way is calmer until you know which side is edited. Sync is a copy, and copies drift. Decide which side wins when both changed, and test that decision with one record you edit in both places. A sync that runs overnight can overwrite a correction someone made at 5 p.m. Start with one direction: the booking app fills the sheet, and nobody edits the sheet by hand. Two-way sync is a project, not a checkbox. Pause the sync before a big import. A bad spreadsheet can fan out into every system that trusts it.
How an owner would use it
Name the direction. Sync the fields you can afford to be an hour stale, not a gate code you changed for a lockout. When a sync fails, the workflow should say so. A silent failure looks like a quiet day.
Common mistakes
Two-way sync between a chat export and the CRM will overwrite a good phone number with a bad one. Syncing more often is not free. It can hit rate limits. Do not sync a field you do not understand just because it was in the default mapping.
