What is an IVR?
An IVR (interactive voice response) is the button menu on a phone line: press 1 for the shop, press 2 for the road desk. It follows a tree you drew. It does not understand a sentence unless you add a voice agent on top.
Also called: phone tree
In plain English
Callers hate a nine-level tree. A short IVR can still sort road emergencies from people who want hours. An AI receptionist can listen to a sentence instead of a button. You can use a short tree and then a person, and never buy the AI layer. Call the tree from a noisy street, not from the desk. Count the buttons to reach a person. If it takes more than a couple, callers will hang up or mash zero. Record the menu in the words customers use, not the words on your invoice. Check the after-hours branch. A tree that traps people is worse than a voicemail that says when you will call back. Update the recording when hours change. A cheerful menu that announces yesterday's close is a broken sign.
How an owner would use it
Write the tree on paper first. If every path ends at the same phone, you do not need a tree. If you add AI later, keep the emergency path as a button a human answers.
Common mistakes
Replacing a bad tree with an AI voice that has no script just hides the tree inside a rambling bot. Do not build seven departments you do not have. Do not send after-hours callers into a loop. A phone tree is not a knowledge base.
A worked example
A tire shop
Press 1 if you are stuck, everything else rings the counter
This is an illustration, not a customer result. The line says press 1 for a highway lockout-style roadside request and otherwise stay on the line for the counter. There is no AI voice. The counter still uses the missed-call text when they cannot pick up. The menu is one level.

Questions owners ask
What is an IVR?
An IVR is a phone menu that routes callers based on buttons or simple spoken digits you defined in advance.
How do I decide between an IVR and an AI receptionist?
If a one-level menu and a person solve it, stop there. Add a listening agent only for the calls the menu cannot sort, and give that agent a written script.
What is a phone tree?
Phone tree is the everyday name for an IVR. Same menu. Same risk of trapping callers if every option is a dead end.
