What is a model provider?
A model provider is the company that trains or hosts the model. The app you click, such as a chat product or a help desk, may be a different company that calls that model. Your contract, your data settings, and your bill may sit with either one, or with both.
In plain English
You might pay a help desk, and the help desk calls a model from someone else. When something leaks or the quality changes, you need to know who to read the docs for. Bring-your-own-key is when you pay the model provider directly and plug that key into the app. Vendor lock-in is when leaving means losing the history and the setup. The provider is who serves the model. Your app may hide that name. Ask anyway, because outages, data use, and the cutoff follow the provider. If you depend on one provider for the customer-facing draft, know what you will do on the morning it is down. A second provider is useless until you have tried your real prompt on it. Check the status page once so you know where it is. The morning the drafts stop, you will not want to hunt for it. Bookmark it next to the bill. Write that URL on the after-hours card. Jot it on the fridge card too.
How an owner would use it
On any AI add-on, ask who the model provider is and whose data terms apply. Write it next to the login. If they will not say, treat that as a reason to pause.
Common mistakes
Assuming the app vendor and the model vendor are the same leads you to the wrong privacy page. Assuming a familiar model name means the settings match that company's consumer chat is also wrong. The app can wrap the model with its own logging. Read both, or do not put customer data in.
A worked example
A window cleaning company
The scheduling app is not the model company
This is an illustration, not a customer result. The owner turns on an AI rewrite inside the scheduling tool. They ask support which model provider is behind it and where drafts are stored. The answer goes in the SOP next to the login. They do not paste gate codes into the rewrite box.

Questions owners ask
What is a model provider?
The model provider is who trains or hosts the model. The app you use may be a separate company that buys access to that model.
How do I find out who provides the model?
Ask the app's support or read its current security page. If the docs do not name the provider or the data terms, do not put sensitive customer data in that feature.
Does the app's plan include the model bill?
Sometimes. Sometimes you bring your own key and pay the provider separately. The app's pricing page and the provider's pricing page are both required reading. Do not guess.
