What is AI usage cost?
Usage cost is what you pay for runs, tokens, tasks, or credits after the subscription, if the vendor charges that way. The number is on that vendor's current pricing page and on your invoice. A token is the unit. The cost is the bill.
In plain English
One draft is cheap until you run it on every receipt, every night, with a long paste. Owners discover the shape of the bill by accident. Run one real week of the job you intend, on purpose, and read the invoice line. Do not copy a cost from a blog. Plans move. Look at the bill with one week of normal work, not the demo day. Note what drove it: long files, retries, a loop, a model you did not mean to select. Set an alert if the vendor offers one. Tell the team which jobs are worth the spend and which should stay a template. A tool that saves an hour and costs more than the hour is a hobby.
How an owner would use it
Before you automate a high-volume step, do a bounded test and look at the usage screen. Set an alert if the vendor offers one. If they do not, calendar a weekly look. Kill test workflows.
Common mistakes
Quoting a cost per task from memory will be wrong by the time a customer reads it. Looping an AI step across a spreadsheet without a cap is the expensive miss. Rate limits and usage cost are different. You can be under the bill and still be blocked for going too fast, or under the speed limit and still surprised by the invoice.
A worked example
A garden center
One week of plant-care drafts, then the usage screen
This is an illustration, not a customer result. The buyer drafts care notes for the twenty plants on the spring table, using the notes they typed, and checks the app's usage page at the end of the week. They do not turn on a nightly run for the whole catalog until that page makes sense for the season.

Questions owners ask
What is usage cost?
Usage cost is the metered part of an AI or automation bill, based on the vendor's current units such as tokens, tasks, or credits.
How do I estimate it without a fake number?
Run the real job at a small volume, read that vendor's usage screen, and only then decide whether to loop it. Ignore secondhand prices.
Does a flat subscription mean unlimited use?
Often no. Read the plan for caps, overages, and what counts as a task. The marketing line and the pricing table are not always the same length.
